Sun, Sand & Serves: Why Pickleball Vacations Are Trending (Even If You’re a Beginner)

Carrie Ducharme • May 20, 2026

What if your next group vacation included sunshine, ocean views, beachside cocktails… and a little friendly competition?

It may sound unexpected, but pickleball vacations are quickly becoming one of the most fun and social travel trends out there, especially for groups. And before you think, “Oh, I’m not good enough for that,” let me stop you right there: you absolutely do not have to be a great player to have a great time.

As a travel advisor who specializes in beach vacations and group travel, I’m seeing more travelers trade purely poolside vacations for trips that blend relaxation, connection, and just enough activity to make things fun. Honestly, pickleball at a beach resort checks a lot of boxes!

If you’ve spent even five minutes around an active friend group or the water cooler at the office lately, chances are someone has brought up pickleball.

Maybe they’re obsessed. Maybe they’ve joined a league. Maybe they’ve gently pressured you into “just trying it once,” only for you to suddenly find yourself shopping for paddles a week later.

But here’s what people are not talking about enough: pickleball vacations.

And personally, I think they’re one of the most fun, social, and underrated group travel trends right now.

As a travel advisor who specializes in beach vacations, group travel, and active escapes, I’m seeing more interest in trips built around shared experiences. And pickleball just makes sense. It brings people together, keeps everyone moving, and adds a layer of fun to vacation without feeling overly structured or exhausting.

Even better? You absolutely do not have to be good to enjoy it.

In fact, beginners may love these trips the most!

Why Pickleball Vacations Are Suddenly Everywhere

Pickleball has exploded in popularity for one simple reason: it’s approachable.

Unlike some sports that require years of experience or intense athleticism, pickleball is surprisingly easy to pick up. You can laugh your way through a match, improve quickly, and still have a great time even if you miss half your shots.

That accessibility makes it ideal for travel.

Vacation is about connection, fun, and making memories, and pickleball naturally creates all three. It gives groups something active to do together without turning the trip into a bootcamp.

A morning clinic, a few friendly matches, lunch by the pool, a beach walk, cocktails at sunset, dinner together. Honestly, that sounds like a pretty great day.

For many travelers, especially couples, empty nesters, and friend groups, it’s also a way to stay active while traveling without feeling like you’re “working out.”

You’re moving, laughing, socializing, and spending time outside. It feels more like fun than fitness.

And that’s part of why it works.

Good News: You Do Not Have to Be Good

This might be my favorite part.

There’s a misconception that pickleball vacations are only for competitive players or serious club members. Not true.

Many beach resorts throughout the Caribbean and Mexico now offer complimentary pickleball clinics, beginner lessons, and casual open play.

Translation? You can absolutely show up as a beginner. You'll be amazed at how quickly you gain momentum and improve playing every day!

Chas and I are still pretty new to pickleball ourselves. We’ve taken clinics, started playing more regularly, and quickly realized something: it is just plain fun.

Some of our favorite moments have been laughing through missed shots, accidentally hitting the ball in completely ridiculous directions, and celebrating the occasional point like we’re somehow championship material.

That’s the beauty of it.

Pickleball vacations are often less about performance and more about experience. They’re about sunshine, movement, connection, and trying something new with people you enjoy being around.

And for beginners, a resort setting is actually one of the best places to learn. There’s less pressure, more relaxed energy, and often instructors available to help you build confidence.

Why Pickleball and Group Travel Are the Perfect Match

If you ask me, this is where things get really fun.

Pickleball and group travel are a natural fit.

I’m talking about:

  • friend groups who want something different than a typical beach trip
  • couples who enjoy staying active together
  • retirement leagues looking for a fun getaway
  • pickleball clubs ready for a destination escape
  • multigenerational families where everyone wants an activity they can actually enjoy together

Because the game is so accessible, it works surprisingly well across skill levels and age groups.

Not everyone has to be competitive.

Some people want clinics. Some want social matches. Others just want to cheer everyone on from the shade with a tropical drink in hand. All of those people are welcome.

The best group trips strike a balance between togetherness and flexibility, and pickleball vacations naturally create that rhythm.

You play in the morning, relax in the afternoon, gather for dinner, maybe catch live music at night. There’s built-in connection without needing a rigid itinerary every minute of the day.

That is a huge reason these trips work so well.

What to Look for in a Great Pickleball Resort

Here’s where a little insider knowledge matters.

Not all “pickleball resorts” are created equal.

A resort may advertise pickleball, but the actual experience can vary dramatically.

When I help clients plan these types of trips, here are some of the things I look for:

✣ Dedicated Courts vs. Hybrid Courts

This matters more than most people realize.

Some resorts have true dedicated pickleball courts, while others simply paint or tape lines over tennis courts. If pickleball is a major focus of the trip, that difference matters.

For serious or club players, true courts are always the better experience.

✣ Programming & Clinics

Does the resort offer:

  • complimentary beginner lessons?
  • organized open play?
  • tournaments?
  • instructor-led clinics?

For beginner groups, this can make the entire trip more fun and far less intimidating.

✣ Group-Friendly Logistics

This is a big one.

Some resorts are fantastic for groups and can easily accommodate club travel or multiple couples traveling together.

Others have restrictions around group bookings or limits on how many organized groups they allow on property at one time.

These are details most travelers would never know to ask, but they absolutely impact the experience.

✣ Vibe Matters

Are you looking for:

  • adults-only and elevated?
  • lively and social?
  • wellness-focused?
  • family-friendly?
  • nightlife?
  • quieter luxury?

The “best” resort depends entirely on your group.

What works for a retirement league may not work for a high-energy couples trip.

✣ Level of Play

For more experienced players, some resorts now offer impressive programming and even USA Pickleball-certified courts.

Certain Caribbean resorts, including select Sandals properties, have invested heavily in quality courts and organized play.

Mexico is also stepping up in a big way, especially at larger all-inclusive resorts that combine active programming with excellent food, beaches, and easy air access.

Why Working With a Travel Advisor Actually Matters Here

I may be a little biased, but this is exactly the kind of trip where professional planning makes a difference.

Planning a pickleball getaway is about much more than finding a resort with courts.

It’s about matching the right resort to the right group.

A beautiful resort means very little if the courts are disappointing, the programming is weak, the vibe is wrong for your group, or the property can’t properly accommodate the size and style of trip you’re envisioning.

This is where relationships, destination knowledge, and experience matter.

I already know which resorts consistently run strong programs, which ones are beginner-friendly, which are best for more serious players, and which properties truly understand group travel.

My job is to help make sure your trip actually feels effortless once you arrive.

Because the best vacations are the ones where all you have to worry about is whether you’re headed to the beach… or back to the court!

Enter the Luka Duffle by Calpak — the unicorn of carry-ons. My daughter actually had it first, and I have been envious ever since. That girl dragged her Luka back and forth across the country traveling for work (and fun!) and it still is in perfect shape. That’s when I knew I had to have one. When I saw it mentioned in a traveler forum, I started my deep dive into reviews, and finally decided to get my own. It’s the perfect color for me, a light, dreamy lavender. A few trips later, it’s safe to say I’m obsessed. It’s stylish without being flashy, soft without feeling flimsy, and functional in all the right ways. 💡 What Makes the Luka Duffle So Great f you’ve ever tried to shove a week’s worth of “just in case” outfits into your under-seat bag, you’ll understand the beauty of this design. Here’s why the Luka has become my go-to for everything from Caribbean vacations to weekend getaways: Lightweight, soft exterior: That signature puffed nylon fabric somehow looks chic and feels like a cloud. Smart compartments: A separate shoe pocket (hallelujah), interior zip sections, and a padded sleeve for your laptop or tablet. Did I mention: So. Many. Compartments. Trolley sleeve: Slides perfectly over your suitcase handle — no more juggling coffee, boarding pass, and bag straps in the security line. Extra-big exterior cup holder: even holds an Owala. Under-seat fit: It passes the dreaded “personal item test” on most airlines while holding a shocking amount. Colors for every vibe: From classic black to that gorgeous blush tone that gives “effortlessly put-together traveler.” They also offered limited edition colors and materials such as metallic tones. Adequately cushioned straps: Comfortable shoulder straps that are just the right length. Need I say more! It’s the rare bag that makes me feel both organized and a little fabulous.

I’ll be honest: I didn’t think I’d be a cruise person.
The idea of being “stuck on a boat” with thousands of strangers, loud buffets, and cheesy entertainment didn’t exactly scream luxury getaway. But earlier this year, my husband and I took our very first cruise .... and it completely changed my perspective. What we discovered was nothing like the outdated cruise stereotypes we’d heard. In fact, it was so much better than we anticipated. 🌊 First things first: Sea days are a dream We thought we’d be counting the hours until our next port stop. We thought we'd be "wasting" vacation time and that there would be nothing *special* about our days at sea. Boy we were we wrong! Instead? We found ourselves looking forward to every single sea day. We were on the Celebrity Edge, and it was luxurious with so much to see and discover. Morning yoga overlooking the water, leisurely breakfasts on our private veranda, late afternoons spent in the thermal spa, and evenings watching world-class entertainment - all without rushing or repacking. It felt like the perfect blend of fun, excitement, relaxation and freedom. 🪄Cruising offers something rare: the ability to deeply unwind and wake up in a new destination without lifting a finger. 💫
